On This Rock - Breaking the Cycle of Poverty

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

OUT OF OUR VISION TO BREAK THE CYCLE OF POVERTY CAME OUT MISSION

Why Honduras, when there is so much poverty and needs all around us?
You have asked a very important question, one that we have certainly thought about and wrestled with in the process of determining our own giving and of setting up this non-profit. This is a question we want to answer because we asked it too.

In Matthew, Jesus says that one of the criteria by which the righteous will be judged is by how we minister to the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the necked, the sick and the imprisoned. Yet only a few verses later He says that we "will have the poor with us always."

So the question for us becomes where can we do the most good with our limited recourses. Certainly there are innumerable problems, begging for solutions, most with astronomical price tags. In almost every case in the United States, where the government has taken on the BIG problems, they've spent Billions, and left the problem either unsolved, or hardly dented and in some cases bigger and in more disarray than before they got involved. There are more "poor" in the United States after the "Great Society" than before it started. Certainly our poor in the United States are "richer" than any other countries "poor." Our "poor" have two cars, air-conditioned houses, color TV's, nice clothes and cell phones. This is not because our government is bad or uncaring, but because you can't solve complicated human problems by committee consensus. It's hard to imagine where a few dollars, or even a few hundred could cure a disease like cancer or HIV or move a family out of poverty or send a student to a trade school or college. We have supported "local good causes" all of our lives. We still do but we don't have Millions to spend on curing cancer, like Jon M. Huntsman. We don't have Billions to spend on Global Health and Development, like Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett.  We thank God for them and what they do and the difference they make in this World. What we do have is a little and our friends and family have a little and some people we don't even know have a little. Putting those modest amounts together, the next thing you know, we can change the lives of a few people, who live on less than a dollar a day who don't have good access to healthcare and who's children suffer from malnutrition. We think that's worth doing.

Don't support us, instead of your Church or instead of your local Food Bank or instead of Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity. But, if you've got a little, that you'd like to see go a long way, we'll put it with the little we have and change some lives by offering them a "Hand Up" not a "hand out." We support and fund projects that teach people with the desire and drive to "fish" or "sew" or "work on cars" or do "wood working" or "raise chickens" or "milk cows" so they can support and feed themselves and their families and won't need a "hand out" tomorrow.A small contribution to "On This Rock" will be Seen and Acknowledged and Very Important to us. Fifty dollars will accomplish more in Honduras than $750.00 to $1,000.00 here in the States. You will be Connected To and a Part of Something greater than yourself. You will be giving Hope for the Future to people who are born with very little hope. "One of the fastest ways to feel better about yourself and increase your own happiness is to do something that you admire." If some of the things you admire are being of service to others and doing things that will truly change lives, here's a way.  In the process, we will show you how your contributions are helping change lives and we will protect your privacy and trust by never selling your name, or address or e-mail address.

Thank you in advance for your help !

So we must decide where we think we can do the most Good with our resources. If we do nothing the government will take our resources in the form of taxes and spend them on "its" projects, while wasting up to 80% of the money before it gets to those in need.  So we have decided to "leave this world a little better off because we were here" and address some of the needs we know about while allowing you to join us if you believe in what we are doing. We will spend your money and ours wisely, we will do it with volunteers and pay NO salaries. We will concentrate on projects that will "Break The Cycle of Poverty" and not allow it to continue. Were there is Sickness we will support Medical projects that will cure the sickness and Building and Educational projects to keeping it from returning. Where there is Malnutrition, we will support projects that will solve the problem and Education to keep it from re-occurring. Where there are poor people with the ability and desire to improve their lot in life, we will support projects that will give them a  "hand up" to becoming self sufficient.  Our first projects are in Honduras, one of the poorest countries in this hemisphere. If this sounds interesting, follow our progress. See what we've done and what we plan to do. If you like what you see we invite you to come along and help us where and how you can.  Please stop by again. Thank you for your interest!

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Two of my favorite Bible verses are about "foundations." The first three Gospels report Jesus asking his disciples, "Who do men say that I am?" After some discussion, Simon Peter answers "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God." Jesus replied that "flesh and blood has not revealed this to you but My Father who is in heaven." Then, using a play on the word, rock, according to some interruptions, Jesus goes on to say "And I also say to you that you are Peter, (petros-pebble) and on this rock (petra-foundation) I will build My church, and the gates of hell shell not prevail against it."

Here Jesus proclaims that this "understanding," that He is "The Christ, the Son of the Living God" will form the rock solid foundation for the prophesied church. Not denominations, but the "body of Christ" that will do his will in the world. Here at "On This Rock" we use this name only to remind ourselves and our partners that we endeavor in some small way to do "His Will" in this world. Matthew 16:13-18 NKJ

Having spent some of my life as a "builder" I appreciate the fact that the foundation is the most important part of any structure or of any beginning. In Luke the discussion is called "The Parable of the two foundations" in Matthew it is called "The parable of the two builders." In Luke Jesus says "Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation 'on the rock.' And when the flood arose, the stream beat on vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock."
